Hello everyone! The team at Dentistry at the Grove wishes everyone a Happy Mother’s Day and hopes you have the chance to spend some time with your families this weekend.
Unfortunately, we have some sad news to share with you. We are heartbroken to announce that Dr. Carmini Ramya (C. R.) Fernando passed away on Jan 25, 2023 after a short battle with cancer. This news has been difficult for our whole team and we took some time to grieve the news before sharing it with you.
So to celebrate Mother’s Day this year, we’d like to honour Dr. C. R. Fernando. She was a proud mother to Dr. Niromi and her son Chummy, as well as a successful dentist and business owner. She may be gone, but her knowledge, persistence, and care lives on through Dr. Niromi and the rest of the staff at Dentistry at the Grove.
Dr. C. R. Fernando was born in Sri Lanka, the youngest of four children. As she was starting a family, Sri Lanka was suffering through a 25-year long civil war. So Dr. C. R. Fernando needed a safer environment to raise her family. Despite graduating as a licensed dentist in 1977, she moved to Canada ten years later with her two children and husband to start a new life.
Her initial time in Canada wasn’t easy. She had to spend five years and a lot of resources to recertify her dental license, all while raising two kids in a foreign country. However, she always dreamed about owning her own practice and never let her stresses distract her from her goals. Eventually, her persistence paid off. After graduating in 1991, Dr. C. R. Fernando purchased her own Brampton office in 1996 and ran it for 22 years before joining her daughter Niromi’s new clinic — Dentistry at the Grove — in Burlington.
One of Dr. C. R. Fernando’s greatest strengths as a dentist was that she never stopped learning. She enrolled in many education courses after her licensing and embraced new and evolving techniques in the industry. Therefore, her daughter Dr. Niromi continues to incorporate Dr. Fernando’s passion for learning here at Dentistry at the Grove. For Dr. Niromi and her mom, constant improvements are key to providing the best services to their clients.
Dr. C. R. Fernando lived in Oakville for over 30 years and loved her local community. She enjoyed travelling, tasting good food, and spending time with her friends and family. She became quite the yoga fanatic and revelled in her healthy lifestyle. But most importantly, she loved her career. She was proud to keep many people smiling throughout her life as a dentist, a mother, and a friend to her community.
While we mourn the loss of Dr. C. R. Fernando, Dr. Niromi and the team at Dentistry at the Grove strive to provide you and your family with the highest standard of dental care possible. We care for you like we care for our family!
Happy Mother’s Day!
